I understand exactly what you are saying here. I can remember in the 50's getting paua of a resonable size in knee to wast depth near Raglan. I assume there would have been paua out deeper (probably bigger).This area had had a long history as a Maori kaimoana area. As the population grew, roads opened to new areas, more people got cars and more pakeha began to like seafood, I guess this area like most of the coast line experienced a massive adverse affect on all the forms of sea life. Even in the 70's crayfish in 4' at East Coast was common, I doubt if that area now has them at that depth.
