In the late 60’s I went to a North Island West Coast spot to get my sack of paua ( if there were limits then, we were not aware ). On this particular day all the paua were out of the water or just below the surface on the rock face. I simply treaded water to gather them. The surf was zero, the tide was low, it was about 8.30am but due to the cliffs the sun would not strike the area until about 10 and it was summer. I had dived at this spot many times before, and still do, this is the only time I have seen this. The paua are in guts about 10 to 15 ft. deep.
I did not check out other guts in the area to determine if they were also out of the water there.
I have spoken to many people about this they have never seen this happen.
I do not think that pollution was the cause
Do you have any idea as to why?
