Hi Wade, I have another experience to put to you, that I have not been able to get a definite explanation. Over 15 years ago 500m off rocks to the side of Taupo Bay Northland my wife and I were sitting in a boat, at dusk, when about 30m. from us a number of water spouts appeared each between 20 to 40cm. high. We heard them before we saw them, we think there was about 20 spouts a time. Each fountain lasted a short time, possibly just like a puff or may have been longer (It was a while ago so the memory may not be so clear) They were in a group. As each spout seemed to rise from a different location within the area, I thought that there were more of what was creating the spouts than the number of spouts we could see at a given time. The only thought that I have is that they may have been created by squid. I did not have any dive gear in the boat so couldn't have a look.
