Firstly I cannot be given credit for the pics, they are from John Andersons' video he took while we were over there. You should see it!
There is no doubt that hapuka are not adverse to shallow water, and your post re-affirms that, but there is also no doubt that they also live in deep water. Why is it then, that they do not exist in shallow water any more but are still able to be found in the deep? Maybe habitat preference as John suggested?
As I said earlier, due to its isolation I do not think that a direct comparison to mainland NZ is possible. When I gave reference to the Chathams isolation and general location, I was implying the possibility of more productive waters than on the mainland. This seemed the case to me when I was there as almost everywhere we dived there was a layer of krill or some kind of (mysid??) shrimp on the bottom, and frequent clouds of similar critters near the surface.
