I don't mind admitting I'm one of those up and coming divers who feels a little pi$sed off that my chances of ever seeing a Hapuku on scuba are pretty much nil.

I enjoyed a talk by Dr Garry Tee at the Devonport Library on Thursday night on the early days of scuba diving in New Zealand. He talked so enthusiastically of a dive he did with you Wade, to see a majestic 3m Black coral tree at 55m at the Poor Knights. His photos were all dimly lit because he was so narked he couldn't interpret your signals, informing him his strobe was pointing askew and not illuminating the tree. After the talk, I asked Dr Tee where at the Knights this beautiful coral tree could be located, only to be informed that he had returned to the site on another occasion, to discover all that remained of the specimen, its sawn off trunk. What can you say to that really?
