Roga's comments on the hapuku are so sapient they shd be framed in gold on every diver's wall. What a bloody miserable legacy we are leaving our descendants. A polluted, overheated world that is only a fraction of what we have enjoyed. They will curse us and rightly so. We came, we saw, we conquered and we crapped on it. Eighty-seven percent of NZrs now live in cities: a very highly urbanised society. We are rated the worst country out of 134 on Earth for endangered and extinct species. Docos on wildlife bounced off statellites are nearly all made overseas or we see 'reality' TV. Remember how that 'Old Blue" Wild South doco about the black robin on the Chathams galvanised the country? Remember the successsful national "Save Manapouri" campaign? Ok -we are great at rugby and yachting and we take pride that one of us knocked off a great mountain and called it a bastard. But our native forests are doomed without birds and so many of our coastal reefs are virtually barren of reef fish. It is not the Japanese who are condemning our Hectors and Maui's dolphins to join the moa and the huia. Seen any green crays lately? Most divers dont even know they are the juveniles of the mighty packhorse.
