Nick : it is great that you have shed light on that kina mystery. Over the yrs I have noted urchins with bald tests at the Poor Knights and wondered... There used to be a patch of them near Blue Mao Arch, close to the 'window'. I blamed it on the swinging anchors chains of smaller boats that anchored there . On the other side of the channel , on the wall I once filmed a big Charonia trumpet shell eating one with a bald patch. I asssumed the conch had removed the spines so it could hoe in. But maybe the dinoflagellate makes it easier fr tests to be penetrated.
