My friend, Ryan, claims to have seen a 'black' crayfish at Matauri Bay over Easter. It was in a nest along with Jasus edwardsii crayfish of many sizes. He says it was very distinctive compared to the normal 'red' crayfish next to it. The carapace was black while the flexible joints were the normal off-white colour. Other than the colour the animal appeared normal. Natural variation?
