The vaquita, a porpoise living in the upper part of the Gulf of California, is probably 2 years away from reaching such low levels of population its extinction cld be irreversible. Onlyabout 150 vaquita exist. About thirty of them drown ech year in nets set fr fish and shrimp. It is critically endangered. The baiji in the Yangtze river, China, was recently declared likely to be extinct. Entanglement with fishing gear led to its demise.
