In the USA their NMFS has filed a proposal to have the black abalone declared an endangered species. Once abundant on the Californian coast since the eighties populations of this relative of our paua have plummeted due to: poaching'; a bacterial disease called 'withering' ; overfishing and natural predation. The fishery peaked in 1973.
