TAKING THE BIG FISH EFFECTS EVOLUTION A recent experimental study sheds further light on the topic discussed earler on this site re the genetic effects of removing the larger fishes [or crays etc] from a population. One wonders why it is so hard for us to apply to marine life lessons so obvious to us on land..[Wade]

Dr Peter Biro, Uni of Tech. Sydney and colleague John Post have reported on experiments they did with lake trout showing that the more aggressive and bolder fish are likelier to get caught, leaving the more timid fish that take fewer risks in foraging, to contribute more to the gene pool.

Commenting on their report U.S. biologist John Waldman said: " We rarely succeed in even the basics of achieving long-term sustainablity of important commercial species." www.pnas.org
