It sound slike this might have been the eyebrow perch, a species of Hypoplectrodes (closely related to the red banded and half banded perches) - has vertical bands on the body and heavy eyebrow ridges. It was called Carpenter's perch by some people. It's a deeper water cousin of the relatives mentioned above. The convict grouper is another fish (Epinenphelus octofasciatus) that, as far as I'm aware, has never been seen by divers, although juveniles may occur as shallow as 30 m overseas. It usually occurs considerably deeper (200-400 m), is larger and is more closely related to the spotted black grouper than the banded perches. I'll post a pic of a convict grouper taken from a ROV on the Kermadec Ridge.
