ZEF’S DREAM COMES TRUE WADE DOAK

When seven-year-old Zef Steenbergen flew to New Zealand from Holland with his parents he dreamt of meeting dolphins. At Tutukaka he sailed out to the Poor Knights but no dolphins appeared. On the way home there were no dolphins but just as the charter boat Perfect Day reached the harbour entrance six big bottlenose dolphins were lolling about right in their path. They approached the bow and gallivanted about at Zef’s feet but he could not swim with them. His parents took their excited son up to the Bay of Islands and went out on a dolphin encounter boat. Again they met dolphins but they had their babies with them. Zef could not enter the water. His parents set out on their New Zealand holiday. For some reason no one can explain, on pure impulse, they decided to go to remote Mahia Peninsula. Unbeknown to them the solitary but sociable dolphin Moko has been holding court there since March 2007. In late January 2008 Zef met Moko and swam with her.
