Craig : very valuable observations. The mantas do this when plankton feeding. They get in a rich area and loop the loop, guiding plankton into their gaping mouths wit their appendages. It wld be the most efficient way to maintain a good intake of small zooplankton like krill. I Hawaii a wharf directed sodium lights over a patch of water. This attracted plankton at nite. Now divers go there, sit on the botom and watch the mantas feed. A major tourist attraction on the Big Isle.
