Hi Janet,
This is a carpet/draughtsboard shark (Cephaloscyllium isabellum) egg case - dogfishes don't lay eggs (although the English incorrectly call members of this family dogfish). You can see the embryo on the left of the yolk. The fussy red mass is probably the filamentous gills.
