Hi Wade

Nice photos and a beautiful fish. It's a deepwater relative of the red pigfish and foxfish - Bodianus flavifrons. It doesn't have a common name, but flavifrons means yellow front in reference to the stripes across the face. The species was first described in 2001, and ranges from eastern Australia and New Caledonia across to the Kermadecs, and into northeastern NZ (it has been reported from the Aldermen before but I don't know where else it occurs). Once people get to recognise it we might find it throughout eastern Northland and bay of Plenty on deep reefs.

Cheers,

Malcolm
