Hi Wade
An idea occured to me after some of us had been discussing the vision of a future Sandspit. I think that the ideal solution could be for it to become a bird or wildlife Sanctuary. The advantages are manifold: saving wildlife and at the same time offering great benefit to the community.
The word ' wildlife sanctuary' speaks to the heart of an number of people. The area is eminently suitable with dunes, on the spit, sea shore and estuary, wetland and forested slopes. With protection the numbers of birds would increase. It could be seen - in time - as a counterpoint to Karori wildlife park near Wellington, which has become hugely popular.
The popular request has been for the area to be in public ownership. Unless the impact of human activity is carefully regulated great harm could be done to the fragile environment and its inhabitants. A Sanctuary would be a way of being ablef to offer protection and at the same time allowing the public to enjoy the site .
Cheers
Sophie
