KAIIWI LAKES The largest of the three Kaiiwi lakes, [near Dargaville] Lake Taharoa, is 37 metres deep. The three lakes have the clearest water in Northland and being on a plateau are not affected by run off.

I love to revel in deep snorkelling there. It is much like the tropics at this time of year. The water is so warm and it is a delight to drop down onto fine white sand and just stand there and look up. Reminds me of the lagoon of Noumea No wet suit needed. No gear to wash up afterwards.Plentyof small fishes; rainbow trout and koura [more visible at night]. Interesting for close ups in the weedy, near blood heat shallows. For diving visitors to the north it is an alternative when the weather gets really rough. Good road there and camping facilities. There are inexpensive bungalows you can rent nearby. You could dine at the Funky Fish at nearby Baylys Beach. And visit the universe with the big telescope a few houses along.
