SUPERB! I like the personal tone. I have met Nick over the POOR KNIGHTS MR- we had dinner together at Ngunguru and Jan and I found him very sincere, quietly passionate and resolute. He had made a scuba dive in the reserve with our son Brady.

I note that all this is coming out in the midst of controversy re the failed blue cod fishery in Marlborough Sounds. Clearly recreational fishing needs the support of protected areas. Catch limits alone cannot safeguard a fishery. They really depend on the random factor of how many people decide to go fishing in an area- and a high level of enforcement. With a population the size of Christchurch and a dearth of havens like Akaroa, the need for well proven conservation methods is dire.

Much of my time is sent in giving interviews to foreign media about our marine reserves. Overseas NZ is admired for what we have done. I feel such admiration is ill-founded when we look at the pitiful extent of our protection measures. This must painful for Nick because this party have been outstanding re MARINE RESERVES.
