What is the difference, in terms of conservation value, between the TAIAPURE classification and the Marine Park at Mimiwhangata where time has proven exclusion of commercial fishers and exclusivity to recreational fishers had a negative outcome for conservation? It concentrated recreational fishers in the Park because they perceived an advantage in fishing where others could not. The collapse of the blue cod fishery in Marlborough Sounds area has necessitated a total closure.

My friend Dr Tony Ayling oversaw a voluntary closure on the Great Barrier Reef asked for by recreational fishers. Target fishes, small tropical gropers, increased in the area during closure but fell back just as much when it was reopened.

Most thinking fishers, especially those who have been around for a while. can appreciate the need for zones where fish can propagate freely; where the genetic stock is protected; and the need to leave large mature fish as stud. On my Facebook page there are youtube videos shot recenty by Canadian TV showing the astonishingly prolific Poor Knights fish community now it is total no-take. Having dived there since 1963 I am absolutely staggered.
