[I ASKED KATHLEEN REID IF IT WAS TRUE THAT THERE IS NO COMMERCIAL FISHING IN AKAROA HARBOUR WHERE THE MINISTER HAS DECLINED A MARINE RESERVE - Wade]

"Hi Wade

Commercial fishers have the opportunity to crayfish (not trawl) in Akaroa Harbour. There is only one commercial crayfisherman working out of Akaroa now, John Wright. John does not crayfish in Akaroa Harbour. He may occasionally set a trap in the harbour, but this would be rare and in effect there is no commercial crayfishing in the harbour, not like the old days, say in the 70's before QMS. John has all the peninsula at his disposal (except Pohatu of course).

Murray Kylie is a local trawlerman, doesn't crayfish and no trawling is allowed in the harbour. The commercial paua fishers have only expressed concern about the reserve being under the Lighthouse. We have no knowledge of them fishing in the harbour.

Hope this helps. Thanks for all the support. This issue is becoming a large one, which is good!

Keep in touch Kathleen
