Wietske: very nice to hear from you again. It is not appropriate to feed wild dolphins- for many reasons.
It sounds like you are seeing a pod which has a nursery group. If you meet them without imposing on them in ANY way they may eventually come and look at you if you are diving down playfully together and making noises. I do not know what species you are meeting , so comment is difficult. Some species are night feeders on prey such as squid and gather in certain bays each morning to pass the day . Such dolphins have play periods with an intervening rest period. Rest periods shd never be interrupted. At such times they dive and breathe very regularly.
