And what about the recreational fish watchers of nowadays? Does anyone consider this portion of society? We get fish killing programmes side by side on the main TV channels. There is no balance, presenting aspects of the amazing lives of fishes, their sensory systems, body designs and methods of swimming -as I tried to get across in the docos I did for TVNZ Natural History and in my own largely unseen DVDS for which there is no transmission outlet. Cheap to make reality TV has sway over wild life docos. A balance is required under the TV On Air charter, but this has become a joke. Big business is sponsoring recreational fishing: killing fish means lots of boats and hi tech gear.

But NZ depends on its green image to export these days. EVERY KIWI KID HAS THE RIGHT TO ACCESS A MARINE RESERVE WITHIN DAILY RANGE OF SCHOOL: 'WET LIBRARIES' SHOULD BE AN AMENITY OF EVERY SCHOOL like libraries and sports grounds. The future of our seas is in the hands of the kids now at school; tomorrow's scientists and decision-makers. Where can they see an unmodified marine ecosystem without MRs? How can there be any reliable science to guide our sustainable fisheries?

How could any MR ever pass in the future if no compromise with recreational fishers were made? Many reccies up here now affirm the value to fishing of the PK MR: the precious gene pool it holds is appreciated. Beside this, for local fishers The Poor Knights is a giant F.A.D: fish attraction device. Has there ever been any official survey or recognition of this positive aspect of MR? There is stacks of recognition of the value of MR published overseas. Can it be left to the opinion of a local population with no idea of the context in which their denial of a MR is occurring? And short-sighted political expediency: vote catching..

I used to be able to correspond with govt ministers. But not these days. My letters never get a response other than acknowledgement of receipt.
