The organisers of a public memorial for Moko the dolphin are expecting huge crowds at tomorrow's public service in Whakatane.

The friendly dolphin's body washed up on Matakana Island last week and it has been decided he will be buried on the island on Saturday. The decision has angered locals in Mahia and Whakatane who wanted Moko buried in their areas.

Andrew Baucke, the Department of Conservation's Tauranga area manager, hopes to release Moko's body in time for tomorrow's service. He says iwi in Mahia and Whakatane are upset but understand that Matakana Island iwi are now Moko's guardians."
