My book ENCOUNTERS WITH DOLPHINS AND WHALES shows a similar grouping of sperm whales like those you will find further on in this photo series. The pix in my book came from Lord Howe Island lagoon. When sperm whales are in this grouping, divers can come and go in their vicinity and be ignored. Even when a Lord Howe diver was bumped involuntarily against a whale by the current , it showed no response. I do not know of any explanation for this behaviour, but the sperm whale has a colossal brain. Mostly they are engaged in solitary deep dives for prey. I have found other descriptions of such behaviour but it is not often witnessed. In the situation in those pictures I doubt the diver is a 'whale whisperer'. I suspect he has had nothing to do with the situation and that it is a media construction.
