They are a subtropical sea urchin, Heliocidaris tuberculata, which is reasonably common in the islands north of NZ (Lord Howe, Norfolk, Kermadec). In NZ, they occur in places that get hit by warm currents flowing down the northeast coast of North Island, such as offshore islands and coastal headlands - Cape Brett, Deep Cove and Oke Bay are great spots for finding rare subtropical animals.
