It appears that world-wide “fishing the line” at the very edge of Marine Reserves is becoming common practice – and fishing within the reserve is just the next step in this process.
I do not believe that increased signage is the way to go – I am of the belief that most of those that do fish within the reserve know exactly what they are doing.
However pleading “ignorance” is no defence in the eyes of the law, so perhaps we need DOC to mount a couple of successful prosecutions annually.
News of a fine of up to $10,000:00, imprisonment for 3 months along with confiscation of boat and fishing gear would very quickly circulate around the Recreational fishermen, with, I believe, salutary results.
OK then DOC – over to you - what about a couple of prosecutions?
