The NZ National Spearfishing Championships, which will be run from Ruakaka next week from January 20th to 27th, has put the Poor Knights on the list as a destination for the photography competition on Thursday 21st January.
This freedive-only photography event is one of the most popular events of the National Championships and the top places are always keenly contested. Anyone can enter. Each competitor is given a disposable camera by the organisers and must capture as many species of finfish on one film as possible in a time period of up to 3 hours. The challenge is excellent - getting multiple fish species in each frame, taking the risk of flooding cameras by exceeding the manufacturer's recommended depth limits - finding the fish - all whilst freediving. Prizes also go to best photo, best specimen photo, and there is a digital category (not sure of the rules for that).

Results will be announced at the prizegiving on Sunday night in Ruakaka when films and prints are returned.
This is a fun opportunity for all - expecially popular with kids. It would be great to see some of the locals turn out to compete and show their knowledge of fish in the area. It would pay to register interest before the event to ensure enough cameras are available and to ensure you meet up with the organisers at the right place prior to the start at Tutukaka (9 am). Price $40 includes camera and developing.
Anyone interested can phone me (021 909 558) or Gary Cullen (at Bream Bay Butchery) beforehand and we will make sure you are included in plans. Reid Quinlan
