My neighbours had a Poor nights moment recently right up Ngunguru river near our place: dense schools of grey mullet feeding on the surface very noisily. Diving further down under mangroves I was pleased to see some really big 18 inch grey mullet, the size that used to be common and were once fished commercially on the Kaipara and exported in cans. Off Matapouri another boating friend reports several large brown blobs on the surface, which turned out to be krill aggregations. I am surprised nothing was preying on them.
